With SHOT Show just around the corner there will be lots of new guns and gear to talk about over the next few weeks. One that I’m particularly excited about is the 7mm Backcountry cartridge from Federal. I know some folks poopoo new cartridges saying things like we have enough, don’t need anymore, or it does nothing cartridges we already have do. I’m not one of those folks. I like options and I especially like niche cartridges purpose built for a specific pursuit. Almost as much as I like new general purpose cartridges.
I think a lot of this nay saying comes from folks who do not want to admit there is something new and better than what they have. Or maybe something new that they did not think of first. I also think some folks are just generally grouchy ass humans who look at new cartridges like new genders — they are not the same thing. New cartridges represent the evolution of ammo, and it’s been a hell of a long time since shooters witnessed an evolution like this one.
Some will say the 7mm Backcountry is not needed or brings nothing new to the table, and they will be wrong on both accounts. Though I do not need a long range hunting cartridge, some hunters need and want one. And without question, the 7mm Backcountry is unlike anything we have ever seen. But what excites me more than the 7mm Backcountry is what other new cartridges can be created from the technology it uses.
