Success writing about guns and an outdoor life has little to do with the ability to diagram a sentence. Yes, you need the ability to write, but it is so much more than that. Above all else, you need to be authentic and be able to tell an interesting story.

I think you are right about English teachers. They have derailed almost as many careers as guidance counselors.
My son spent seven and a half years in law enforcement and never once sat on a witness stand. I told him once that the reason for that was because his report writing was so perfect he left nothing to be questioned. All his cases pled out before trial.
His English teacher from high school told him he couldn't diagram a sentence if his life depended on it. The only reason he wrote so well was because he was always reading and knew how a sentence should sound.
To an extent you are correct. Editors sometimes have a different opinion :)
In some cases that is true. Of course there are some great teachers and guidance counselors -- I had a few of them.
