Sometimes going back is such a let down. Like going back to you elementary school and seeing how "small" it all really was.

We often say we will never forget, but then the details sometimes slip with time.

There's something to be said for writing the things we want to remember down...our brains have a way of failing us at times.

Yeah that spot is gone. Physically. But it’s in your memory forever. The good memories I have like that I can close my eyes and bring back the sights, sounds and smells. I can feel the same emotions and excitement. So I guess as long as I remember it all still exists.

I remember and know the exact spot that I shot my first ground squirrel; I still walk right by it several times per week with my dog, but it is no longer a cattle ranch or open to hunting of any kind. It is now part of the national park that my residence backs up to, so at least I can roam all over it on our horses. I used a Remington .22 bolt rifle for that, and by the next year was taking coyotes with another Remington, a 700BDL Custom Deluxe 30-06. It was a great place for a young man to hunt, target shoot, learn about off-road driving, and of course a bit about handling livestock. Now that ownership has changed, there are of course all sorts of other people. But the memories are all mine.

What a very special memory! These are the memories that will last a lifetime and matter most, at least to me.. Truly loved reading this article!! I must admit I found my soft spot and got that lump in my throat that I sometimes get, and I almost shed a tear or a few as my eyes welled up especially toward the end. Thank you for sharing such a special memory.
