Wilson Combat’s new Bulwark Pistol

First Impressions

I’ve known about this pistol for quite some time, and I did not expect to like it very much. I found the enclosed hammer appealing but did not like the idea of the grip safety, trigger safety, or the lack of a thumb safety. I just finished a full review of the pistol for NRA’s American Rifleman (not sure when it will publish), and the gun will also be included in Field & Stream’s 2026 handgun test (July 2026). It would not be appropriate to steal the thunder of that article or test, but I will share the following:

· I really like this pistol.

· If you ignore the trigger safety—and you can after a bit—it’s just a 1911 trigger.

· The grip safety activates three safeties. I’ve learned to ignore it too.

· I turned in my best and fourth-best times on my Step Back Drill with this pistol.

· Substantially less muzzle rise than a 1911 pistol.

· I’ve now exceeded 1300 rounds with this pistol without cleaning and it runs impeccably.

· I still miss the thumb safety and do not like thumbing the slide when I holster.

· I’ll acquire this pistol, and I’ll carry it.

· I think it far surpasses any striker-fired pistol I’ve shot.

STEP BACK DRILL PERFORMANCE

The Step Back Drill is five-stages, one each at 5 yards, 10 yards, 15 yards, 20 yards, and 25 yards. At each stage you draw from the holster and engage an eight-inch steel plate with two shots. Each stage is timed separately, and the five times are added together. Any miss on any stage disqualifies the run. Times listed are the averages for clean runs only.
